The four application fields of Rare Earth elements in New Energy Vehicle industr

  1. Rare earth permanent magnet motor
Rare earth permanent magnet motor is new type permanent motor that developed from the early 1970s. It has same working principle with traditional electric motor but different magnet materials. There are four main types of magnets: ceramic (ferrite), AlNICo, Samarium Cobalt (SmCo), and Neodymium (NdFeB). The third-generation rare earth permanent magnet NdFeB is the strongest permanent magnet in contemporary magnets. In cost aspect, since the main raw material iron of the NdFeB magnet is very cheap, so its price is much lower than Samarium Cobalt magnet. In addition, NdFeB magnets have better mechanical properties than Samarium Cobalt magnet, which make them easier to cut and drill for complex shape. Compare with traditional electric motor, Rare earth permanent magnet motor has lots of advantages like simple structure, stable operation, small size, light weight, low magnet loss and high efficiency. Therefore, Rare Earth permanent magnet is popular in new energy vehicle field.

  1. Rare earth power battery- positive
Rare earth elements as electrode materials are added in current mainstream battery production. It found that rare earth elements can improve stability of whole battery material structure, making battery has higher stability of charging and circle life. The mainstream ternary Lithium battery is Li (NiCoMn)O battery. Adding La2O3, CeO2 etc. Rare Earth elements can enhance battery performance by improving oxide element shortage in battery charging circle. Recent years, Chinese battery manufacturers added nano Rare Earth oxides such as nano yttrium oxide to develop better ternary Lithium battery.
Rare Earth elements also added in VRLA (valve-regulated lead acid battery) and NI-MH battery (nickel-metal hydride battery) for better battery performance in circle life.

  1. Ternary catalyst converter for vehicle exhaust emissions
The hybrid power car also play an important role in new energy vehicle field. There is a certain amount of toxic substances from their vehicle exhaust emissions. Ternary catalyst converter which equipped in car exhaust port will enhance oxidation-reduction reaction of CO, HC, NOx, promoting those substances turn into harmless gas. The main element in ternary catalyst is Rare earth elements including Ce, Pr and La.


  1. Ceramic material of oxygen sensor
Ceramic oxygen sensor is used in testing oxygen content and sending information to engine computer. Oxygen sensor also is necessary part of ternary catalyst converter in electronic fuel injection system. Since Rare Earth elements have special electronic structure, making them can store oxygen in Ceramic material. So Rare earth elements are used in ceramic oxygen sensor for improving performance.
